Getting the Experience to Make Them Count

Recently, I was contacted by someone regarding an old article I wrote in 2007 on Speech Recognition and the future of mobile technology. Much of what I wrote about then, is a reality now, and some is still to come. Does that mean I have a crystal ball here? No, but regarding my article on voice recognition which it was a 2-hour project, as I was just using my memory and personal experiences to put together that article. You see, I am NOT involved in that research, but have written quite a bit on the topic, ideas, concepts, solutions for programming the software and overcoming challenges.

If you want to write articles for personal tech, mobile technology and if you want those articles to be worth their salt, then you have to immerse yourself in the topic, okay so let me explain what I mean. Over the last 15 years, I’ve followed the technology and often read Speech Technology Magazine to stay up on things, and talked with folks at trade show booths at Comdex, CES, and other shows. Since I read 75 paper magazines per month and take 100s of online e-mail newsletters per week, speech recognition technology often pops up on my radar screen – across a spectrum of industry sub-sectors.

Writing personal tech articles is difficult and if you make a mistake, it will be unforgivable in the blogosphere. So, you have to be up on things, and study, and fact check too. Yes, I’d certainly like to write some more articles on this topic and bring more important points of contentions to the public online, thus, they will be read by those in the technology sector. And if you concentrate on such things you will find a strong following.

For instance, my articles do get around – many are syndicated and/or reproduced elsewhere on average 17 times each, thus, I am up to an estimated 150 million article views currently. Indeed, it also pays to have contacts in the industry to get opinions and quotes, and having the ability to dig up my former contacts and acquaintances with close friends involved in the research and discuss with them free-market real world applications is paramount.

So, if you wish to be a personal tech writer, and realize there is a lot of competition out there, then you need to develop a following, and write about the hottest new innovations. Then you must completely immerse yourself in the technology, buzz-words, and read and study everything you can find. Then you are well on your way. Please consider all this.

New Mobile Technologies

A decade ago, passengers used to call taxi drivers by making radio calls and it took too long for the drivers to reach the location because they were unable to track suitable routes that do not have a lot of traffic. But, with changing needs and introduction of smartphones and tablets, the services have been modified to maximize customer satisfaction with minimal time. These touch-enabled devices have simplified that business norms and now, passengers are left with high quality taxi applications that allow them to call a taxi driver with a few screen touches. The passengers are now able to download the desired taxi app and let the drivers know about their current location along with the destination, thus allowing them to find out the best route to reach the place within a short time.

Innovations in mobile technology allow mobile users to freely roam wherever they want. Whether they are students (studying abroad), business associates (gone for a meeting) or tourists, all they have to do is to use the taxi application and call them to carry you to the desired place. The modifications have significantly changed the basis and face of the taxi industry and, thus allowing the drivers and passengers to remain in contact.

Every taxi company has its own mobile taxi application that is used by both, the passengers to hire a taxi and the taxi drivers to track and communicate with the passengers. The mobile taxi applications provide complete information about the taxi drivers and allow the passengers to keep track of where they are and when they will pick them up. With the other part of the interface, the drivers follow a real-time GPS-driven map to keep an eye over the progress.

Some taxi companies give special training to their drivers so that they can take care of passengers’ health and can easily operate the application. Though, some drivers are equipped with the skills but might end up with misusing the GPS-enabled devices for any personal purpose, thus increasing the data usage cost.

Since taxi companies have huge fleets of vehicles, they need to design a highly efficient and reliable software to manage all the devices, installed in their vehicles. The software will keep them updated about the recent progress, monitor drivers’ performance and provide remote support.

The taxi industry has come a long way and turned out to be the best transportation solution. Taxi companies are able to overcome a lot of challenges with latest mobile technologies and their taxi applications. Some of the prominent reasons to hire their services include:

• Taxi applications only allow drivers and passengers to keep in contact. There is no third-party involved in their communication.
• Drivers are not allowed to change any application setting because it can be only accessed by the admin.
• Mass deployment of fleet devices can be done within a short time period.
• It’s quite simple for the drivers as well as passengers to learn how to use the taxi app.

Future of Cutting Edge Mobile Technology

By the end of this decade almost anyone who has a mobile phone or any other wireless hand-held device will have more computing power in their hands than was available hardly two decades ago on a high-end desktop PC.

This is without any consideration to the bandwidth backbones required to power the grids supporting wireless communication (e.g. DS3 Bandwidth and greater such as OC3 bandwidth or more … likely ethernet too).

So, this being the case, where do you see the game changing application of such enormous computing power? I am not talking about programing your DVRs or watching a rerun of a show on your hand-held …….

Mobile technology will continue to surprise (delight?) us with all its ever increasing computation, bandwidth, form-factor, input/output options, content, and applications being spawned by the 1000s every day (thanks to application stores such as the iTunes appstore).

But the question is about “disruptive” and “game changing”. The real power, the disruption, and the game-changing will emerge when the bulk of society embraces the facilities on offer. That is the bottleneck. Getting too excited about technology specs is probably naive. Back in the Apollo days we reached the moon with just half the computing power of about one Intel Intel 80386 PC. But since then growth in productivity/GDP etc. has not followed Moores law (although computer processing power has). We’ve had MMS phones for many years now, but how come SMS still rules in messaging?

The game changing devices, technologies, and applications are already here (or can be built within a few months). But does the average John Doe want to play the game?

Any discussion on Applications of the mobile devices, will always open the flood gates for discussion on the infinite number of applications that could be made. But if we are looking for what we call the killer apps that would make a big difference to our life styles, then I would bet my two cents on these over the next decade……

* Health and Science ….. real-place, real-time, meta-tagged health information will build a national database for health & disease tracking. Mobile computing power in human health sciences is essential for cutting administrative costs within the system. (Part of the Obama stimulus fund to digitize the health field will help supply health science data.)

* Social Experience / Interaction ….. Increase capacity for broadband wireless networks (4G, LTE etc.) will help to equip business & home with video telephony for virtual, life-like interaction, means less travel for employees of global companies, as well as providing new opportunities for those who are not yet global. Foreign trade will spring up in a new generation. Must bring down the in-home networking complexity and costs. Verizon’s “the Hub” is a baby step toward this.

* Mobile, global money ….. I don’t know enough about global finance systems to answer with any certainty, but I suspect mobile transactions will provide a huge and stealthy disturbance to our ways of working/buying now. Currency and exchange will change mediums from the days of cash/credit to “no contact” financial exchange.

I only state these particular examples because there is demand developing with a new generation who will come of age after a down turned economy has recovered; the technology is already present; other countries are already implementing them.

Advancement of Mobile Phone Technology

Mobile phones have become an integral part of our daily lives. More number of people are buying them and are becoming a part of the mobile community. The main benefit of them is that they allow people to contact anyone at anytime.

There are a number of features present in the handsets that are available in the market. Still more and more features are being added as research is continuously being carried out in a big way in this field. The features that you can enjoy depend on the model that you have. The basic feature of a mobile phone includes saving the contact information of a person. These days MP3 players, PDA’s and GPS systems are being integrated in these sets. You can also send and receive e-mails, play games, read news and do many more things with them. It is important that you are aware of the latest technology handsets that are available these days. If you do not know how to use them then what is the need to buy an expensive device. These days a new model is launched by all manufacturers almost every month. Rarely a month goes by without a manufacturer making an announcement about some new features.

The functioning of a mobile phone is quite similar to that of a radio. Wireless communication technologies have been around for a long time now though there efficiency was not as great as it is today. The earliest technology used in mobile phones is referred to as 1G. This technology is used analog signals for communication. Then came 2G technology. With the advent of this technology the number of channels increased. The technology which is being used in most countries these days is 3G. It has allowed users to make use of amazing features like higher speed of video and music downloading, faster internet access while you are on the go. In some countries 4G technology has already come into existence. The power consumption of these devices is also not very high and this makes them affordable to keep.

The competition in this business is immense. This has made the market conditions favourable for the customers. The companies are locked in an intense battle with each other to poach maximum customers from the available pool.

Mobile phones have revolutionized the way we communicate with each other. It has made it very easy to contact anyone at anytime. This technology is still evolving and there are many exciting things in store for us in the future.

The Evolution of Mobile Phone

Every month, millions of people worldwide are adding themselves to the mobile phone community. This will go on all because mobile phones are such great devices that using them you can talk to anyone in this world from anywhere, anytime.

Mobile phones provide you an array of feature that you can speak as well as sent and receive data. But, it depends on a model that a mobile phone can contain as many as possible features within. A mobile phone stores contact information of your desired people, sends and receives e-mails, displays you flash news, enables you playing simple games in your free time etc. Mobiles phones integrated with PDAs, MP3 players and GPS system are also widely available. However, only few may know how mobile phones with such integrated features actually work. Knowing the technology, that work behind such mobile phones could sure help you using it extensively. At least a new model is released with newer add-ons every month. If you are in idea of buying a new mobile phone then you also need to be sure about how to buy a mobile phone before your purchase.

At this point, you need to know that the very quite fact about a mobile phone is that its functions similar to a radio. The technologies like telephone and wireless communication been invented more or less in the same period (actually in late 1870’s), soon after these two combined to give us the model for today’s mobile phone. People later started using these radio phones fitted inside their cars and its antennas been mounted on the top. However, because of lesser channels available, more people were not able to use these radiophones. To add, you can compare that day mobile phone to a CB radio or a walkie-talkie to understand it better.

Today, the smarter thing about mobile system is splitting up of an area into smaller cells thus enabling millions of people to use the mobile phones simultaneously. Mobile systems function in a way that within a cell area, at least 56 people can talk on their mobile phone at a time. In another side, to send and receive the tower signals, mobile phones are equipped with low-power transmitters.

Related to technology, its first generation, which used analog signals is called 1G. Digital transmission coming into existence, the number of channels increased which were of 2G mobile technology. The mobile technologies, which were later developed, claimed superiority over the earlier. The current 3G mobile phones offer you unbelievable features like email, stereo sounds and video. In the power consumption part, battery-operated mobile phones normally consume low power and this has made the possibility of having handheld mobile phones.

Another important aspect with the mobile phone is the services offered to the subscribers are of cheap rate. This is because mobile phone system requires a number of base stations in a region to operate its service. But as most people use mobile phones, the cost per user remains low irrespective of large number to based stations installed. A mobile telephone switching office handles all the phone connections and controls the bases stations that function under it.

Mobile Phone Technology

Mobile phones are definitely one of the hottest gadgets of recent times. People don’t just want another phone for making or accepting calls, they want something very stylish and chic which they can flaunt. The companies manufacturing handsets are emphasizing on the designs and features that would attract the consumers. Let us help you understand a little bit more about multiuse mobile phone technology.

With your handset equipped with camera, you can click pictures wherever you are. The higher the resolution of these cameras, the better the picture quality is. One can opt for a VGA (Video Graphics Array) or mega pixel cameras. The photos clicked on these camera enabled mobile phones can be easily transferred and stored in a computer with the help of various software.

An Mp3 player is another appealing feature of these mobile phones. You can listen to your favorite number even when you’re on the go. In-built FM is also incorporated, keeping in mind the needs of the music lovers.

You surely want your handset to look ultra suave. So how can one miss out the touch screen feature? You can access all applications with your finger tips. It’s much more convenient and impressive than the keypad.

Bluetooth and infrared technologies in your cell phones allows you to transfer your desired pictures, ring tones and music from your friend’s mobile in seconds. Bluetooth wireless technology also enables you to transfer data from your mobile, directly into the computer without using the USB port. Moreover you can use it as a modem.

IF you always wish to stay connected to the rest of the world, then mobile Internet feature is something you will appreciate. With the GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) and GSM (Global System for Mobile communication) in your handset, you can browse the internet anytime anywhere. You will be always connected to your friends, folks and colleagues through e-mail. You can sit at home and make railway reservation, shop through e-shopping, make new friends through the social networking sites, finish your college assignment while sipping coffee in your favorite café or make your payments through e-banking, there are ample number of things you can do with internet on your mobile phone.
